Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that as of 9am today, there were 122,347 tests in the UK, as the Government claimed to have hit the 100,000 daily testing target.
Reports emerged that the figure was including home-testing kits sent out by post in the tally of tests to reach the target, even if the recipient has not yet provided and returned their sample, amid claims that tests were only recorded in the daily count once they had been sent to a laboratory for analysis. The Government denied there had been a change.
Hancock immediately hailed the outcome as an “incredible achievement”, and that his strategy for focusing on a seemingly high goal was vindicated.
“I knew that it was an audacious goal but we needed an audacious goal,” he said. “I can announce that we have met our goal.”
